English - Reading and Writing

How is English taught?

English is the teaching of reading, writing, speaking and listening and grammar.

At Osmaston CofE (VC) Primary School English is taught as a stand alone subject as well as being woven through all of our subjects as an essential component of all curriculum areas. We aspire to provide a wealth of experiences to develop the ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing and to listen with understanding.

Our aim is for all of our children to become confident, enthusiastic and responsive readers, writers and speakers. An understanding of how language is the vehicle for communication in both oral and written forms is paramount in our thinking and planning. To become literate, children need to understand that writing is a representation of speech, and that both come in a variety of forms linked to purpose.

We have a very large year group of Yr6 pupils who will be leaving us in the summer to go to secondary school. This will free up some places in other year groups for September 2024. Please telephone the Headteacher (01335 343140) to discuss and arrange to look around if you are interested in a place for your child.
