Summary of Implementation of Maths at Osmaston CofE (VC) Primary School

How do we implement Maths?

Mathematics at Osmaston CofE (VC) Primary School is planned and sequenced using White Rose Mathematics. It is tailored to the needs of our pupils with additional depth provided by the NCETM and other materials.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure careful cumulative coverage, with a taught focus on the connectivity of mathematical concepts applied throughout the school year, with precise sequencing of taught knowledge and skills to enable strong progression for all pupils. Our cumulative and in-depth application of the curriculum allows our pupils to develop a more profound depth of understanding and application, as they building on previous learning while engaging with challenging and meaningful tasks.

Through rigorous and consistently high expectations of pupils’ fluency, we ensure that pupils have the number knowledge to access the ambitious range of reasoning and problem solving ingrained in our curriculum.

The Teaching of Fluency

We intend for all pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

The Teaching of Reasoning

We intend for all pupils to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.

The Teaching of Problem Solving

We intend for all pupils to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing levels of challenge, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Automaticity

Automaticity is the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. It is usually the result of learning, repetition, and practice. At Osmaston CofE (VC) Primary School, automatcity is attained through learning, repetition, and practice. Each day pupils have an opportunity to revisit and practie learning from previous lessons.

A Vocabulary Rich Environment

We have created a vocabulary rich environment, where talk for maths is a key learning tool for all pupils. Pre-teaching key vocabulary is a driver for pupil understanding and develops the confidence of pupils to explain mathematically.

Online Maths Tool

In order to advance individual children’s maths skills in school and at home, we utilise Times Tables Rock Stars for multiplication practise, application and consolidation.

We have a very large year group of Yr6 pupils who will be leaving us in the summer to go to secondary school. This will free up some places in other year groups for September 2024. Please telephone the Headteacher (01335 343140) to discuss and arrange to look around if you are interested in a place for your child.
