Music

How is Music taught?

The power of music

"Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our schools, music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school."

Model Music Curriculum: Key Stages 1 to 2 Non-statutory guidance for the national curriculum in England March 2021

Music is an enjoyable experience for children at Osmaston CE(VC) Primary School where they participate in a range of musical experiences, building their confidence at the same time as developing their understanding of rhythm, pitch and the structure of music. In addition to learning the technical vocabulary for musical elements, children enjoy the performance aspects of music and experience listening to music from other cultures and eras.

Music is taught as a discrete subject but also connected across our curriculum. Children benefit from singing daily in collective worship and thrive during our annual dramatic productions and music concerts. Wider opportunities such as whole class brass lessons for years 5 and 6, an award winning choir and peripatetic music lessons (piano, brass, woodwind and voice) all provide children with experiences of making music.

Participation in music develops wellbeing, promotes listening and develops concentration. We want to ensure that music is loved by children across school, encouraging them to want to continue building on this wealth of musical ability, now and in the future.  Children are encouraged to engage in musical activities outside of school time and many sing in a mixed schools choir with students from our local secondary school (from KS2 up to age18) regularly performing with and alongside a large adult choir in large concerts where people buy tickets to come and watch them perform.

We have a very large year group of Yr6 pupils who will be leaving us in the summer to go to secondary school. This will free up some places in other year groups for September 2024. Please telephone the Headteacher (01335 343140) to discuss and arrange to look around if you are interested in a place for your child.
